Windows 8 is here with its cool new interface, mainly its start menu. Today I'm going to tell you how to get the Windows 8 start menu on your Windows 7. You may ask why would we want Windows 8 start menu on Windows 7? Can't we upgrade to Win 8 directly? Yes, you can always upgrade to Win 8, but some computers' specs don't support Win 8. So this comes into play when you want to experience Win 8's cool new start menu but at the same time your computers specs don't support Win 8.
Mosaic Project is going to help you get Win 8's tile-based start menu on your Win 7. When you start using Mosaic, you just have a few tiles. Don't worry, you can install new tiles. There are tiles to display weather, music player, events, clock, Hotmail messages, Gmail messages, Twitter etc.
Mosaic Project's website clearly states that: "Mosaic is not an attempt to fully copy Windows 8 UI."
So its just to experience the new Win 8 start menu on your Win 7 and not an alternative to Win 8.
System requirements:
-Windows 7
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0
Instructions on how to set it up:
Download Mosaic Beta 1 Refresh: http://mosaicproject.codeplex.com/downloads/get/275505
Now extract the file.
You'll see a bunch of folders and files in the extracted Mosaic Beta 1 Refresh folder.
Run the "Mosaic" application.
You'll see this screen:
Now don't get disappointed because you only have 2 tiles. Here's how you can add more:
Choose the tile(s) you want and download them. For this tutorial I'm going to download the "Weather" tile.
After downloading, extract it.
Copy the extracted folder and paste it in "Widgets" folder in the Mosaic folder.
Now, run the "Mosaic" application and click on the right corner of the screen. After clicking, you'll see a black bar.
Now click on the "Add" button on the black bar.
You'll see the Weather icon there, because we've put the Weather folder in Widgets folder. Now click on the icon.
When you click on the Weather icon, the Weather tile shows up on the main screen.
So if you want to add more tiles, download them from http://mosaicproject.codeplex.com/releases > extract the file> copy the extracted file > paste it in the "Widgets" folder in the Mosaic folder > run the Mosaic application > click on the right corner of the screen > click on "Add" > click on the icon of the tile that you want to add. Or click on the "Mosaic Store" and add tiles. That's how you do it.
Hope you liked the tutorial. Please comment if you have any questions, suggestions, doubts etc.
